Minutes of the conference call of the California Suffolk & Hampshire Sheep Breeders’s Association.
Meeting called to order at 7:02 pm, June 11, 2009 by Vice president Greg Ahart as requested by President Bob Walters. Members participating were Greg Ahart, Ryan Estes, Mary McMurphy, Allan Freitas, Jed Asmus, Jim Neumiller and Secretary Kathy Vieira.
Ryan Estes reported the General Fund contained $15, 472; Money Market contained $44,463; CD holds $19,607. Coble Scholarship has $15,441. Chair suggested leaving the funds in one banking location. Moved by Freitas, seconded by McMurphy to accept the treasurer’s report. Motion passed.
Moved by Walters, seconded by Neumiller to accept minutes as emailed, faxed or mailed. Motion passed.
Ahart gave a recap of the Reno All American Nugget Show and
Board members had some recommendations for improving the 2010 sale. Freitas felt the market lamb people needed more room. Neumiller said people need to know where to park trailers. Suggestions were made including a sign for next year and posting a map on the barn chart.
The padding under the stage got the sheep to relax and was a good idea.
The web cam was fuzzy and the sound not as clear as needed. There were no lot numbers posted, however bids were obtained and the internet bidding was considered a success, with room for improving in 2010.

Discussion was held on the proposed Bred Ewe Sale. It will be open to all members of the CSHSBA. Advertising for the event would be by direct mail contracting with Pacific Showcase. Information can be posted on the website. It was suggested to keep the fees nominal around $20 entry plus a 10% commission. Also a listing on the Club Lamb Page was suggested. Age of ewes will be solid mouth or younger.
Allan Freitas suggested his son-in-law for auctioneer and might be able to get a “family discount.” Dana Van Liew would like to be part of the committee. UC Davis will provide the ultrasound and the people power for $150.
It was suggested to build a back drop type of display to showcase our activities. Jed Asmus has information about backdrops.
The most opportune time for the newsletter to come out was listed as June, September January and March.
Mary McMurphy suggested a contest for a new logo with prizes awarded to the winning design. Jed Asmus can work on formatting.
Allan Freitas will hand out buckles at State Fair.
